Why it comes back

Blue and yellow are the only two colours a dog separates cleanly. GHOSTCATCHER is coloured on exactly that axis, so it stays visible where orange discs vanish into the grass.

A UV star pattern only your dog's eye picks up. Invisible to you, a beacon to them — in tall grass, at dusk, on snow.

Woven canvas over a foam rim — no hard plastic anywhere. It goes in the washing machine, and in our own tests it floats and flies far.
FAQ
Yes. There is nothing rigid in it: a woven nylon canvas body with a closed-cell foam ring sewn into the rim, so the whole disc gives under a bite and a missed catch to the face is a non-event. The UV pattern is printed in banknote security ink on the finished top and sealed under a coating. In our own durability tests the disc held up to repeated fetches and bites. GHOSTCATCHER is built for catching and carrying; it is not a chew toy. Supervise play and retire a disc once the rim is torn.
9 inches (23 cm) across and about 130 g (4.6 oz). That is a standard competition-style diameter, and in our own throw tests it flew long, steady distances while staying soft for a dog to catch and carry.
Yes. GHOSTCATCHER floats, so a throw into a lake or pool comes back instead of sinking. It is also machine washable — cold wash, air dry — so mud, drool and pond water rinse out between sessions.

Colour vision
Because to a dog, red and green are nearly the same color. Dogs are dichromats: their retina carries two cone types, with peak sensitivities near 429 nm (blue-violet) and 555 nm (yellow-green), where humans have three (Neitz, Geist & Jacobs, 1989, Visual Neuroscience 3:119–125). Red, orange and green all land on the same axis of that two-cone system, so a red disc lying on a lawn becomes a dull yellow-gray shape on a yellow-gray background. The one pair of hues a dog separates cleanly is blue against yellow. GHOSTCATCHER is colored on exactly that axis, which is why it stays visible where the best-selling orange discs vanish.
Ultraviolet
A dog's lens passes far more UV-A light than yours does. Douglas & Jeffery (2014, Proceedings of the Royal Society B 281:20132995) measured the ocular media of 38 mammal species: the dog lens transmits UV-A down to roughly 335 nm, while the adult human lens blocks nearly everything below about 400 nm. That light reaches a dog's retina, where its blue-sensitive cone still responds. GHOSTCATCHER's surface is tuned to reflect strongly in UV-A and blue, so the disc carries extra brightness and contrast for a dog in a band your eye never registers. We do not claim dogs see a new color; the published data supports more light and more contrast reaching the retina — and that is what keeps a disc findable at dusk.
Comparison
Most dog discs are designed to look good to the person buying them. GHOSTCATCHER is designed around the animal catching it. The table below compares GHOSTCATCHER with a typical hard-plastic or rubber dog disc on the six things that decide whether a throw comes back.
| Feature | GHOSTCATCHER UV Dog Disc | Standard dog disc |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility to dogs | Blue/yellow axis + UV-A reflective surface — high contrast on grass, at dusk, on snow | Usually red, orange or dark — low contrast against grass for a dichromat |
| Size | 9 in / 23 cm | Typically 9–10 in |
| Weight | About 130 g / 4.6 oz | Typically 80–150 g depending on material |
| Material | Woven nylon canvas over a closed-cell foam rim — gives under a bite | Hard plastic or dense rubber |
| Floats | Yes | Varies; many hard-plastic discs sink |
| Price | $34.99 for 3 ($11.66 per disc) · $15.99 single | Typically $8–$20 per disc |

FAQ
Partly, yes. A dog's lens transmits UV-A light down to roughly 335 nm, while an adult human lens blocks almost everything below about 400 nm (Douglas & Jeffery, 2014, Proc. R. Soc. B 281:20132995). Light in that band reaches a dog's retina and stimulates its blue-sensitive cones, so a surface that reflects UV-A reads as brighter and higher-contrast to a dog. Dogs do not gain a separate "UV color"; they gain extra light and contrast in the blue channel — which is exactly what GHOSTCATCHER is tuned to.
Because a dog sees red, orange and green as almost the same hue. Dogs are dichromats with cone peaks near 429 nm and 555 nm (Neitz, Geist & Jacobs, 1989, Visual Neuroscience 3:119–125). Red and green fall on the same axis of that two-cone system, so a red disc on a lawn is a dull yellow-gray shape on a yellow-gray background. The hues a dog separates cleanly are blue and yellow, and that is why GHOSTCATCHER is colored on the blue/yellow axis.
Three things: color, UV and the material. Standard discs are red, orange or dark, colors a dog barely separates from grass. GHOSTCATCHER is colored on the blue/yellow axis dogs see best and its surface reflects UV-A, so it stays visible in grass, at dusk and on snow. And it is woven fabric over a foam rim, not molded plastic — gentler on teeth, and it goes in the washing machine. See the full comparison at /pages/compare.
